I was recently asked a question if there was an increase in motor vehicle thefts in Stapleton – specifically with Subarus and Hondas.  This is in fact unfortunately true.  Auto thefts in Stapleton are up 40% year to date (119 to 85).  The overwhelming majority of the vehicles stolen are Subarus and Hondas.  This also corresponds with a trend citywide where auto thefts are up 10% over the same time period.  Many of these stolen vehicles were left unlocked or with the keys inside the vehicle.

If you are a Stapleton resident, and specifically own a Subaru or Honda, please contact one of our Community Resource Officers and inquire about getting one of our free clubs.  We have a limited number of these clubs but would like to get them to our citizens in an effort to prevent these crimes from occurring.  You can reach our Community Resource Officers, Ofc. Marika Putnam at marika.putnam@denvergov.org or Ofc. Jay Casillas atjay.casillas@denvergov.org, or by calling our District 5 station at 720.913.1400.

Again, as a reminder please keep your cars locked and do not leave your valuables (sunglasses, computers, purses, phones, and keys) in plain sight within the vehicle.  This is an attraction for criminals and would go a long way in reducing the temptation to commit these crimes of opportunity.

Thank you all for sharing this message with your Neighborhood Watch partners.
